Mumbai Indians made a surprising move by bringing in young spinner Vignesh Puthur as an impact substitute during the IPL 2025 match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Puthur delivered an impressive performance, taking 3 wickets for 32 runs, which significantly contributed to keeping the Suryakumar Yadav-led team competitive, even after they set a subpar total. It is no wonder that Nita Ambani, the owner of Mumbai Indians, expressed her enthusiasm and praise for the promising spinner from Kerala.
In the match against CSK, Vignesh Puthur claimed the wickets of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, and Deepak Hooda, ensuring that the Mumbai Indians remained in contention until the final over.
Following CSK's victory over Mumbai Indians by four wickets on Sunday, Nita Ambani visited the dressing room of the five-time IPL champions, where she presented an award to Vignesh Puthur in recognition of his outstanding bowling performance.
"I would like to present the first award to a young spinner making his debut for Mumbai Indians, Vignesh. Excellent job," Nita Ambani remarked.
As Vignesh's name was announced, his teammates erupted in cheers, welcoming him warmly. Overwhelmed by Nita Ambani's presence, the young player respectfully touched her feet.
"I am grateful to the MI franchise for this opportunity to play. I never imagined I would compete alongside such talented players. I am very happy, especially with the support from our captain, Surya Bhai, which helped alleviate my pressure," Vignesh shared with his teammates.
In response, the stand-in captain, Suryakumar Yadav, humorously gestured for Vignesh to stop flattering him.
Who is Vignesh Puthur?
Vignesh Puthur, a 24-year-old, is the son of an auto-rickshaw driver. He has represented his home state of Kerala at both the U-14 and U-19 levels. His talent was first recognized by scouts from the Mumbai Indians when he played for Alleppey Ripples in the Kerala Cricket League in 2024.
In addition, Puthur has participated in the Tamil Nadu Premier League. During the previous mega auction, the Mumbai Indians acquired the spinner for INR 30 lakh.
Vignesh's performance against the Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk on Sunday even caught the attention of MS Dhoni, who was seen conversing with the young player after the match and praised his bowling skills.
The Chennai Super Kings successfully chased down a target of 156 runs, finishing with four wickets remaining and five balls to spare.
