Mumbai Indians' batter Suryakumar Yadav is now the esteemed holder of the Orange Cap after scoring 54 runs off 28 balls against Lucknow Super Giants in an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. The right-hander's innings was adorned with four fours and as many sixes. During the mid-innings, India’s T20I captain made a candid admission, stating he was pleased when Hardik Pandya lost the toss and Mumbai Indians were invited to bat first.
As a result of this innings by Suryakumar Yadav, Mumbai Indians posted a total of 215/7 in the designated twenty overs. Opening batter Ryan Rickelton also contributed with 58 runs off 32 balls as Mumbai Indians decisively attacked the LSG bowlers throughout the field at the Wankhede.
“To be honest, I was really happy when we lost the toss. Because it’s really, really hot out there, and I mean, it is challenging,” stated Suryakumar Yadav.
“But yes, at the end of the day, being put into bat and scoring 200+, I believe it’s quite commendable from a batting perspective,” he further remarked.
During the progression of his innings, Suryakumar Yadav also surpassed the 4000-run milestone in the IPL. He is now the third fastest to achieve this milestone in the tournament, following Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers.
Commenting on this achievement, he expressed, “Let’s keep doing it. I mean, I don’t want to say anything. I’m enjoying it right now and let’s keep doing it,” he concluded.
‘215 a good score’
Suryakumar Yadav believes that a score of 215 is commendable on this Wankhede wicket. Nonetheless, he anticipates that the LSG batters will aggressively pursue runs and avoid taking any backward steps.
“I consider it to be a commendable score. I mean, batting first, I sense that the wicket is somewhat slow. However, it is going to present a challenge with their batting lineup. I am genuinely excited. Let us see how it unfolds,” he added.
For the Lucknow Super Giants, Mayank Yadav and Avesh Khan finished with two wickets each.
Suryakumar Yadav has accumulated 427 runs thus far in the current IPL 2025 season, boasting a strike rate of 169. 44. In the ten matches he has participated in this season, Suryakumar Yadav has yet to register a score below 25, demonstrating the batter's remarkable consistency.
“I believe it is the first time in a considerable duration that I have been donning this cap. It feels quite special, and I hope to maintain the same performance,” he stated.
“All the processes and routines are currently coming into play on the field. I feel genuinely pleased with this,” he added.
