Suryakumar Yadav Reflects on Champions Trophy Exclusion: "Why Would It Hurt?"

2 months ago | 5 Views

Suryakumar Yadav is a fantastic T20I player, but he hasn't really made a mark in ODIs when given the chance. So, it’s not surprising that he wasn’t picked for the upcoming three-match series against England or the Champions Trophy. On Tuesday, he openly acknowledged that he didn’t take advantage of his opportunities in the 50-over format, admitting that he has no one to blame but himself.

In his 37 ODIs, Suryakumar has scored 773 runs with an average of 25.76 and a strike rate of 105.02. He was part of India’s squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup but struggled to find his rhythm, even underperforming in the final against Australia.

As he prepares to lead India in the five-match T20I series against England, he was asked about his feelings regarding not being selected for the Champions Trophy.

"Why would I feel bad about it? If I perform well, I could make it to the Champions Trophy. If I don’t, I just have to accept that. Plus, the squad for the Champions Trophy looks solid. Everyone in it has been performing great," Suryakumar Yadav shared with reporters before the first T20I.

"They’ve been doing pretty well in that format for India and in domestic cricket too, so I’m really happy for them. It stings a bit to think I haven’t performed as I should have. If I had, I’d still be in the mix. But if I haven’t, then it’s only fair that someone who’s been doing well takes my spot," he continued.

Shocked by Surya not being included

Former India cricketer Suresh Raina recently expressed his support for Suryakumar Yadav, arguing that he should have been included in the ODI squad. After the announcement of India's team, Raina mentioned that Suryakumar could have been a game-changer for the Champions Trophy.

"India has a solid lineup, and I believe Rohit will lead the team to success. However, I was taken aback by Surya not making the cut. His absence will be felt, especially in the middle order," Raina shared on Star Sports Press Room.

He went on to highlight Suryakumar's impressive performance during the 2023 World Cup, where he showcased his ability to score runs all around the field, earning him the nickname Mr. 360. "He plays incredible sweep shots and can really turn a game around. He has what it takes to chase down high run rates against top teams. He definitely deserved a spot in the squad," Raina added.

Suryakumar's last ODI outing for India was during the 2023 World Cup, where he scored 106 runs in seven matches, averaging just 17.66.
