Suryakumar Yadav Advised to Take '15 Balls' Before Unleashing His Power Hitting

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has advised India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav to adopt a more measured approach to his innings prior to unleashing his aggressive batting style. Vaughan contends that Suryakumar’s inclination to attack too soon has played a role in his lack of form during the current T20I series against England, which includes India’s 26-run loss in the third T20I held in Rajkot on January 28.
With India currently leading the five-match series 2-1, concerns regarding Suryakumar’s performance have surfaced. He has struggled to make a significant impact, with scores of 0, 12, and 14 in the initial three matches. His dismissals have predominantly stemmed from poorly timed aggressive shots, resulting in edges behind the wicket or mis-hit that have gone airborne.
In an interview with Cricbuzz, Vaughan emphasized that while India aims for rapid scoring during the powerplay, Suryakumar needs to construct his innings more thoughtfully to aid the team’s efforts.
"There have been several instances where he has fallen victim to relatively soft dismissals. While aggression is important, it is crucial to select the right deliveries to attack. It is evident that one cannot hit every ball for four or six, despite the immense skill and talent present in today’s players. This is simply not feasible," Vaughan remarked.
He further recommended that Suryakumar take additional time to acclimatize at the crease before reverting to his natural style. "For India to stage a comeback, which I am confident they will, they cannot perform any worse in the coming days. However, it may require Suryakumar to consider, 'Alright, I need about 15 balls to settle in, and assess the dimensions of the ground.' He possesses the ability to transition into the explosive boundary-hitting mode that we all recognize," he concluded.
India's batting inconsistency
India's batting lineup has exhibited inconsistency during the series, with wins primarily attributed to individual excellence rather than a cohesive team effort. Abhishek Sharma's dynamic performance was pivotal in securing victory in the first T20I, while Tilak Varma's steady innings played a crucial role in the second match. However, the team has faced challenges in achieving stability. In the third T20I, prominent players including Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma were unable to perform, leaving Hardik Pandya's 40 runs off 35 balls as the only notable contribution.
