New Delhi: Continuing her impressive performance, Haryana’s young pistol shooter Suruchi Phogat triumphed over a competitive field, which included double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker, to secure victory in the 10m air pistol selection trials held at the Karni Singh Range on Thursday.

Suruchi excelled in the qualification round, achieving a score of 586, while Asian Games champion Palak followed closely in second place with 584, and Manu secured third with a score of 581.

The 18-year-old from Haryana elevated her performance in the 24-shot final, scoring an outstanding 246.5, which placed her in first position, just 0.5 points shy of the current world record. Chandigarh’s Sainyam finished in second place with a score of 241.5, while Manu, participating in her first event since the Paris Olympics, took third.

Suruchi has emerged as a standout talent this season, having claimed three individual titles across youth, junior, and senior categories at the National Championships. She further demonstrated her prowess by winning gold at the National Games. The second selection trials for the air pistol event are scheduled for Friday.

The teams for the first two World Cups of the season will be determined based on the outcomes of these selection trials. Manu has displayed commendable form throughout the trials, consistently finishing on the podium in both the 25m pistol and air pistol events.

In the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions (3P) category, Navy’s Kiran Ankush Jadhav, the National titleholder this year, secured the top position with a score of 460.0 points. Akhil Sheoran from Uttar Pradesh finished just 0.2 points behind in second place, while Army marksman Chain Singh took third.

In the men’s 10m air pistol event, Army’s Varun Tomar claimed victory with a score of 243.2, followed by Ajendra Singh Chauhan and Rajasthan’s Amit Sharma.
