Sunrisers Hyderabad Slammed for Denting Shami, Cummins' Confidence After LSG Defeat

Former England captain Michael Vaughan expresses serious concerns regarding the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) bowlers in the current 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The team, led by Pat Cummins, faced a disappointing defeat against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, which has raised questions about SRH's batting strategy.
The aggressive approach of attacking from the very first ball failed against Rishabh Pant's team, resulting in a significant loss for SunRisers. They managed to score only 190 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their twenty overs, while LSG successfully chased down the target in the 17th over, finishing with five wickets remaining. Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh dominated the SRH bowlers, leading LSG to victory with 23 balls to spare.
In the aftermath of the defeat, Vaughan emphasized the need for SunRisers to be cautious in their gameplay to prevent their bowlers from losing confidence while competing on favorable batting surfaces. Bowlers such as Pat Cummins, Adam Zampa, and Mohammed Shami have struggled to contain runs in the initial matches, as their skills have been undermined by the batting-friendly conditions at Uppal.
"While we often discuss Hyderabad's batting prowess and their ability to score heavily, it is crucial to ensure that the bowlers maintain their confidence. They are bowling on a pitch that heavily favors batting. If you examine the statistics, Pat Cummins performed decently tonight, but he conceded 60 runs in the first match," Vaughan remarked to Cricbuzz.
"Zampa faced significant challenges tonight, and Shami's economy rate was 12 runs per over. It is essential to manage your bowling lineup carefully, as they cannot simply bowl on batting-friendly pitches at home and then be expected to perform under pressure without the necessary confidence," he further noted.
'You don't win a tournament by playing one style of cricket'
Vaughan also emphasized the importance of adaptability in SunRisers' batting strategy, suggesting they should tailor their approach to the circumstances of the match. He posited that the result could have been different if SRH had employed a more strategic mindset against Lucknow.
In their opening match of the season in Hyderabad, SRH scored an impressive 286/6 in 20 overs against the Rajasthan Royals, ultimately securing victory by 44 runs.
"I have yet to observe a team in a significant tournament that relies solely on one style of cricket. My concern is that the Sunrisers are adhering to a singular approach, which may necessitate adjustments in their gameplay. While aggression is beneficial when feasible, it may not always be the best tactic when batting," Vaughan remarked.
"Tonight, they fell short due to their overly aggressive strategy. They experienced some luck, but their approach was excessively aggressive. Had they played with a bit more intelligence, could they have reached 220 or 230? Of course, that's easy to say in hindsight. However, I have not seen any team win a franchise league or a major national tournament by sticking to just one style of play," he concluded.
