Sunil Gavaskar Suggests Pushing Boundaries Back to Balance IPL's Bat-Ball Contest

We're now in the third week of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), and it's clear that the vibe for this season is all about going big or going home. Most matches have followed this trend, with a few exceptions here and there. A standout aspect of this strategy is the batters' eagerness to hit as many sixes as they can during the powerplay. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has pointed out that adjustments need to be made to the playing conditions to ensure bowlers aren't left in the dust.

In his column for Mid-Day, Gavaskar suggested that the dimensions of the field should be expanded and the boundary ropes pushed back. “While the batters’ strategy in the Powerplay has changed significantly, the size of the boundaries remains the same,” noted the legendary Indian batsman.

Out of the 22 innings played across 11 matches, six have exceeded 200 runs, and the Sunrisers Hyderabad almost set a new record for the highest IPL score by scoring 286/6 in Match 2 against the Rajasthan Royals. Gavaskar mentioned that there’s ample space behind the LED advertising boards before the stands begin.

There’s actually more room beyond the LED advertising boards that could be pushed closer to the fence. We often see sixes just barely clearing the boundary, and if those LED boards were moved back a few meters, it could lead to more dismissals instead of just sixes for the bowlers, he pointed out.

Gavaskar also suggested that the prize money for players at the end of matches should be raised. "One area that hasn’t changed is the cash prizes from sponsors after the game. While title sponsorships and broadcast revenues have skyrocketed, the Player of the Match award has remained pretty much the same since 2008. Now that the IPL is more established, shouldn’t the prize money increase too, just like how our parents raised our allowance when we transitioned from school to college?" Gavaskar remarked.
