Sunil Gavaskar Revives 'Stupid, Stupid, Stupid' Comment on Live TV, Takes a Light Dig at Himself

On Tuesday, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar brought back the famous 'Stupid, stupid, stupid' moment during a live broadcast just before the IPL 2025 match between Lucknow Super Giants and Punjab Kings at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. His comment was in response to a question about Lucknow's batting style this season.

Lucknow has been hit hard by injuries, with three fast bowlers at the NCA in Bengaluru just before the season kicked off, and Mohsin Khan being ruled out. Although Avesh Khan has made a comeback after his injury, there’s still some doubt about Mayank Yadav’s availability. So, ahead of their first home game against Punjab Kings, the host on Star Sports asked Gavaskar if this was influencing Lucknow's aggressive batting approach this season.

Gavaskar humorously referenced his own past by mimicking the 'Stupid, stupid, stupid' moment. He remarked, "I wish you had asked me this question a bit earlier because I just spent some time with Rishabh Pant, and I would have definitely asked him if that’s why you guys are playing like this. Maybe he would have said, stupid, stupid, stupid question."

After the light-hearted moment, the cricket legend pointed out that having aggressive players like Nicholas Pooran, Mitchell Marsh, and Pant in the lineup naturally boosts their batting strategy.

"When you look at Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh, they are inherently aggressive players. That’s just how they play, and it’s thrilling to watch. Plus, Rishabh Pant is also coming in lower down the order. They definitely have the batting power, and they know it. If your top bowlers aren’t at their best, you need to score more runs to give your other bowlers some breathing room on a tough day," he explained.

What does the phrase 'stupid, stupid, stupid' moment mean?

During the Border-Gavaskar series earlier this year, Pant misplayed a shot and ended up getting caught at third man. Gavaskar, clearly upset, reacted in the commentary box by saying, "Stupid, stupid, stupid!"

He went on to explain, "You have two fielders in position, yet you still attempt that shot. You just missed a similar one, and look where you ended up getting caught. That’s just giving away your wicket. You can’t claim that’s your natural style. I’m sorry, but that’s not how you usually play. This is a foolish shot and it really lets your team down. You need to be aware of the situation."

Later this month, Pant humorously recreated that moment on Instagram while promoting a brand.
