It has been nearly forty years since Sunil Gavaskar last represented India on the cricket field; however, the magnitude of his accomplishments as a batsman, along with his extensive contributions as a broadcaster, ensures that he remains a prominent figure among cricket enthusiasts. This enduring appeal persists despite the emergence of numerous other cricketing legends since his retirement. A recent instance illustrating this was observed before the fourth T20I match between India and England in Pune.

As reported by Mid-Day, police officers stationed near the commentators' box approached Gavaskar for photographs. One officer reportedly asked, “Sir, can I take a photo with you?” To the officer's surprise, Gavaskar responded with a simple, “No.”

Nevertheless, the report continues to note that the former Indian captain then smiled and added, “You cannot take just one photo. You can take two or three photos with me, and not just one. What will you do with only one photo?”

Gavaskar unhappy with Mumbai's Test-level batters

Gavaskar holds the distinction of being the first player in cricket history to surpass 10,000 runs in Test matches. Over a remarkable career that lasted 16 years and included 125 Tests, he accumulated a total of 10,122 runs, achieving an impressive average of 51.22, along with a then-record of 34 centuries and 45 half-centuries. In addition to his international success, Gavaskar was an outstanding performer in domestic cricket, participating in 348 first-class matches and amassing an extraordinary 25,834 runs at an average of 51.46, which included 81 centuries and 105 half-centuries.

Gavaskar has been vocal in urging senior Indian players, such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, to return to the Ranji Trophy following their concerning performances during the 2024/25 Test season. Nevertheless, he expressed dissatisfaction with the performances of Rohit and Yashasvi Jaiswal in the Ranji match they participated in.

"Whether their commitment was genuine or merely a means to retain their BCCI contracts, as was the case for Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer after they missed the Ranji Trophy matches last year, is something only they can clarify. The inclusion of Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal resulted in Ayush Mhatre, who had scored a couple of centuries and several fifties, being excluded from the Mumbai team. It is hoped that the young player had the opportunity to learn from both of these experienced players to enhance his batting skills," he remarked.
