The week-long festivities commemorating the 50th anniversary of the renowned Wankhede Stadium concluded with a grand evening on Sunday, attended by cricketing icons and esteemed guests. The gathering featured notable figures from Mumbai, including former and current captains of the Indian cricket team such as Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Dilip Vengsarkar, Ravi Shastri, Ajinkya Rahane, and Diana Edulji. Additionally, legendary male and female cricketers from both domestic and international circuits were in attendance.
During the celebration, the legendary batsman Gavaskar delighted the audience by performing bhangra and joined singer Shekhar Ravjiani in a rendition of the song 'Om Shanti Om.' The footage of the 75-year-old's dance quickly gained popularity on social media. In another clip, Indian captain Rohit Sharma was seen inviting Shreyas Iyer from the stage to join him in showcasing some dance moves, leaving the Indian batter amused by the request.
Earlier this week, Devendra Fadnavis, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, sent a letter to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to extend his congratulations on the 50th anniversary of Wankhede Stadium. In the meantime, MCA President Ajinkya Naik referred to Wankhede Stadium as the shining star of Indian cricket, one that will never fade.
"Wankhede Stadium is that shining star of Indian cricket that will never diminish, and the 50-year legacy stands as a testament to that. As we pay tribute to those who have been part of the Wankhede legacy and contributed to this remarkable journey, we also stand on the brink of a new era that will foster the next 50 years of cricketing excellence. Wankhede is as integral to Mumbai as the Mumbaikar's connection to cricket. I am confident that the legacy will continue to flourish in the decades to come."
