Sunil Gavaskar Expresses Frustration Over MS Dhoni Retirement Questions: "Why Put Pressure on Him?"

2 days ago | 5 Views

Sunil Gavaskar, the former captain of India, expressed his annoyance over the usual question regarding MS Dhoni's future in the IPL. The wicketkeeper-batter is gearing up to play on Sunday in the Chennai Super Kings' IPL 2025 opener against their long-time rivals, the Mumbai Indians, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

As the IPL kicked off on Saturday with an exciting match between the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, discussions about Dhoni's future in the league resurfaced. However, Gavaskar wasn't happy about it and questioned why the cricket community continues to add pressure on the Indian legend by frequently speculating about his retirement.

"Why do we even need to ask that? Why put him under pressure? Every time people doubt MS Dhoni, he proves them wrong," Gavaskar stated.

He also pointed out that Dhoni can still hit sixes effortlessly and urged everyone to stop questioning his skills.

"Don't underestimate his talent. Even at his age, he's smashing sixes not just over the boundary but into the stands during practice. For Dhoni, age is just a number," he concluded.

R Ashwin is crucial for Chennai

Matthew Hayden, the former Australian cricketer who was also on the panel, believes that R Ashwin, who rejoined his old team after being picked up by CSK in last November's mega auction, will be vital in the upcoming match against Mumbai.

"This is such an exciting matchup. These two teams have a rich history. At Chepauk, CSK has often dominated, just like Mumbai does at Wankhede. A victory here would be huge, and CSK's spin attack—one of the finest in the league—will be essential. Having Ravichandran Ashwin back in the squad is fantastic. He could really make a difference on a pitch that I think will turn. It’s only right that the season opener at Chepauk features the Mumbai Indians," the former CSK player remarked.
