Sunil Gavaskar Criticizes Virat Kohli After Controversial Block Against Pakistan

Virat Kohli commenced his innings against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy match in Dubai with considerable vigor; however, a specific action by the Indian batsman incited frustration in former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar. During the 21st over of India's innings, Kohli executed a swift single off Haris Rauf, directing the ball between cover and point. Upon reaching the crease, Kohli unexpectedly crouched down, seemingly attempting to intercept the incoming throw.

This maneuver appeared peculiar, as there was no Pakistani fielder positioned directly behind him to retrieve the ball. Babar Azam, who had begun to pursue the throw, was still at a considerable distance, rendering Kohli's action even more perplexing.

Gavaskar, responding to the incident, voiced his dissatisfaction with Kohli's behavior. “Nobody is backing up. The fielder at midwicket would have had to dive, but there was no reason for him to interfere with the ball's trajectory. He is fortunate that no appeal was made,” remarked the former captain.

Gavaskar alluded to the possibility of an obstructing-the-field dismissal; however, Kohli had safely reached the crease when he intervened with the throw.

Ramiz Raja, the former Pakistan captain who was commentating alongside Gavaskar, had previously commended Kohli's awareness of the game and chuckled as he remarked, “and here I was, praising his game-awareness.”

Kohli, on this occasion, had an exceptional performance, becoming only the third player in cricket history to achieve 14,000 runs in One Day Internationals during the match against Pakistan. Prior to the game, he needed just 15 runs to accomplish this milestone, and he did so at a record pace, outstripping the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, his compatriot.

At the age of 36, Kohli also set a new record for the most catches by an outfield player in a single match, having taken two catches in the first innings, thereby surpassing Mohammad Azharuddin's previous record of 156 catches in the ODI format.

After winning the toss in Dubai, Pakistan chose to bat first and was subsequently dismissed for a total of 241 runs.
