Australia achieved a remarkable and commanding series victory in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, securing a six-wicket win at the Sydney Cricket Ground. However, for Steven Smith, the day was tinged with a sense of disappointment as he narrowly missed the chance to reach the prestigious 10,000-run milestone in Test cricket, being dismissed twice while in the 9,990s during the match.
The Sydney-born cricketer performed admirably in the first innings, scoring 33 runs and bringing his total to 9,995 before being dismissed. In doing so, Smith became the fourth player in history to be dismissed in the 'nervous 9990s,' joining the ranks of Brian Lara, Alastair Cook, and Mahela Jayawardena.
The drama intensified in the second innings when Smith reached 9,999 runs, only to edge a rising delivery from Prasidh Krishna to Yashasvi Jaiswal at the gully, much to the crowd's anticipation of witnessing the milestone.
Smith's missed opportunity to become the fourth Australian batter to achieve this significant landmark in front of his home crowd at the SCG left him reflecting on his personal disappointment. "One run… it hurt a little bit at the time. It would have been nice to have ticked that off in front of all my friends and family here at my home ground," Smith shared with the Sydney Morning Herald, despite having an overall strong series against India, which included two centuries.
I am optimistic that I can complete it promptly upon my arrival in Galle
Smith, on the other hand, was ready to embrace the future in this context. “But hopefully, I can achieve it right at the start in Galle (Sri Lanka, first Test),” remarked Smith, who will captain the Australian team while Pat Cummins remains at home for the arrival of his child.
Being candid about the impact of the milestone on his thoughts, Smith stated, “I probably allowed it to occupy my mind a bit too much during the match. It’s an exciting milestone to accomplish.” Smith is poised to become the first Australian batsman since Ricky Ponting to amass 10,000 Test runs, joining the ranks of Ponting, Steve Waugh, and Allan Border.
During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Smith recorded his 33rd and 34th Test centuries, surpassing Waugh’s record and closing in on Ponting’s Australian benchmark of 41.
