Steve Smith is back in a big way! The Australian Test captain showcased his skills against spin bowling alongside Alex Carey on Day 2, finishing the day not out at 120 off 239 balls. Meanwhile, Carey was on fire too, scoring 139 off just 156 balls. Together, they formed a solid partnership of 239 runs off 331 balls for the third wicket, which they'll carry into Day 3.

With this century, Smith has now hit 36 in his Test career, tying with Indian legend Rahul Dravid and England's Joe Root for the fifth-most centuries in Test history. This marks his 17th century as Australia's Test captain, placing him fourth on that list. Ricky Ponting, the former Aussie captain, is just ahead with 19, while Virat Kohli has 20 and the top spot is held by a former South African captain with 25.

This is also Smith's second century in a row for this series and his fourth in the last five Tests. Interestingly, he had a dry spell of 12 Tests without a century before scoring 101 against India in Brisbane.

Smith and Carey totally wreck Sri Lanka

Carey and Smith's performance has put Australia 73 runs in front as Day 2 wraps up. Sri Lanka was bowled out for 257, while Australia ended the day at 330/3. The duo teamed up after Usman Khawaja got out just after lunch, leaving the score at 91/3. Smith was on 23 when he was given out lbw to Nishan Peiris, but he quickly reviewed the call, and the decision was reversed since the replays showed the ball hit him outside the off-stump.

Smith celebrated his 36th test century with a pulled boundary off Kamindu Mendis, helping Australia surpass Sri Lanka's score. Carey also shone, smashing two fours off Jayasuriya in one over on his way to a hundred off 118 balls, eventually surpassing his captain's score.
