Stephen Fleming Admits CSK’s Auction Errors Led to Woeful IPL 2025 Run: “We Didn’t Get It Right”
4 days ago | 5 Views
CSK are nearly eliminated from playoff contention in IPL 2025, as they suffered their seventh defeat of the season on Saturday. This was also their second consecutive loss, with SRH winning by five wickets. Additionally, it marked CSK’s fourth straight loss at Chepauk, which only happened once before when they lost the last two matches of the 2008 season and the first two in 2010. This was also the first time SRH has triumphed over CSK at Chepauk after six attempts.
After the loss to SRH, CSK's head coach Stephen Fleming discussed his team's difficulties and attributed them to the mega auction strategy from last year.
“It is challenging to assert that we executed everything perfectly based on our recent performances,” he stated.
“So we have been thoroughly reviewing our style of play. We are also examining how the game is changing.
“And it is not simple. That’s why we take pride in our current record. We have managed to maintain consistency over a long period, and it doesn’t take much for it to shift in another direction. Other teams have improved, and that’s the nature of the auction. However, we simply haven’t managed to get it right. ”
CSK have struggled to identify any consistent batter this season, and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s season-ending injury has exacerbated the situation. Fleming noted, “So you take accountability from the top down, then you also expect a bit more from the players. ”
“But indeed, that is an area where we need to consider and acknowledge that it hasn’t been as successful as it could have been or it hasn’t developed as we had hoped. ”
It's not exactly a perfect science, says Stephen Fleming
Opening up about their auction setback, he stated, “It is also not an exact science. The auction is quite a fluid entity. It’s akin to purchasing [for] 25 hours and mentally and sometimes physically depleting yourself by the end of it. To be honest, I still believe we have a solid squad. We are close. ”
“A couple of crucial injuries, along with a slight dip in form. We have really struggled to establish a gameplan. We’ve made too many changes. I believe we were looking for something that we thought wasn’t present. So indeed, there is a significant amount of responsibility and introspection, and it definitely begins with me at the forefront, 100%,” he added.
Aiming for an unexpected comeback, CSK encounters PBKS in their next match in Chennai on Wednesday.
