Stadium Renovation Completion for Champions Trophy 2025 Deemed Unfeasible

As the 2025 Champions Trophy draws near, apprehensions are rising regarding the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) capacity to finalize renovation projects at the stadiums designated to host the tournament. With less than a month remaining until the event's commencement, a report from Pakistan’s Dawn indicates that it may be "absolutely impossible" for the PCB to adhere to its renovation timeline for critical venues, thereby casting doubt on the nation's preparedness for this prestigious occasion.
“It appears utterly unfeasible to expect the renovation work to be completed by the deadline, yet those tasked with the responsibility are exuding confidence,” the newspaper reported.
The PCB has made significant investments in upgrading three venues: Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi, where the Champions Trophy matches are scheduled to take place. However, with the January 31 deadline fast approaching, the board is under considerable pressure to provide world-class facilities as promised.
Additionally, these venues are set to host other significant international matches, including a four-match tri-series featuring New Zealand and South Africa from February 8 to 14, with the initial two games in Lahore followed by two matches, including the final, in Karachi.
"While the stadiums will be ready to host matches, the real concern is whether the PCB can fulfil its commitment to deliver a world-class experience at these renovated venues for both the Tri-series and the Champions Trophy," remarked a source closely monitoring the construction progress.
Bilal Chohan, a key figure in the renovation efforts, has voiced his frustration over delays in obtaining essential equipment and approvals. “These are the challenges we are facing, and it is disheartening to see criticism directed at us,” Chohan stated, referring to issues such as the postponed release of panels for the new building in Karachi. The panels were only authorized for release from Karachi Port on Sunday night, with installation scheduled for the following day.
With approximately PKR 12 billion allocated for renovations, the PCB is striving to meet its ambitious goals.
ICC CEO resigns
ICC CEO Geoff Allardice resigned on Tuesday, contributing to the prevailing uncertainty. Sources within the international governing body suggest that his inability to present a definitive assessment of Pakistan's readiness for the Champions Trophy may have influenced his decision to step down. With the deadline approaching, the PCB must promptly address these issues to guarantee the success of the event.
