As the SA20 tournament draws to a close in South Africa, an unexpected development has emerged involving David Bedingham, a batter for the Proteas and Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Reports indicate that he inadvertently scheduled two significant life events for the same weekend.
According to South African cricket journalist Firdose Moonda, Bedingham had arranged his wedding to fiancée Jenna van Niekerk for this weekend. However, he found himself in a challenging situation after his team advanced to the SA20 final for the third consecutive time. Moonda stated, “The wedding was booked and planned but then SEC made the final, so now he has moved the wedding to tomorrow,” suggesting that a solution was fortunately found for Bedingham.
Ultimately, the Sunrisers were unable to secure a third consecutive title, as MI Cape Town decisively defeated them in the final match, claiming victory in the tournament's third edition. Bedingham was dismissed early by his national teammate Kagiso Rabada, and the Sunrisers struggled to perform during a demanding chase, as MI Cape Town's talented lineup secured the championship.
In a prior interview with SuperSport, the 30-year-old Bedingham discussed his plans for the weekend, noting that he still needed to catch a flight to his wedding venue on the Sunday following the final match.
Bedingham recounted, "My partner expressed her hope that you all would lose yesterday, but she also mentioned that once we secured a victory, we must reach the final and, ideally, attend the wedding as well." He noted that he had to forgo his own bachelor party while the SEC team competed against the Paarl Royals, resulting in his father taking his place on the trip.
"My best man and brother are also traveling up, and they assured my partner that they would ensure I catch the flight. I humorously remarked that it would likely end up with me making certain they board the flight," Bedingham added.
In the SA20 final, the Sunrisers were unable to achieve a third consecutive victory, as MICT halted their streak with a remarkable display. Strong performances from Ryan Rickleton at the beginning and Dewald Brevis towards the end allowed them to set a target of 181 in the first innings. The formidable trio of Trent Boult, Kagiso Rabada, and Rashid Khan then effectively defended this total, leading MICT to a convincing win by 76 runs.
