Sourav Ganguly’s Concern Over Gill & Rahul in Tests: ‘My Only Worry…’
2 days ago | 5 Views
Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has called on the nation's leading batsmen to enhance their performances in Test cricket and improve their individual averages, which would subsequently contribute to more victories in this format. He expressed concern that only Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal maintain averages exceeding 40 in Tests played outside of India.
"My primary concern when observing their Test performances is that, apart from Virat and Yashasvi, very few players achieve an average above 40 in away matches," Ganguly remarked during an interview with RevSportz. Jaiswal, who has garnered significant attention early in his career, boasts an average of 44.18 from the nine Tests he has played at home. In contrast, Kohli has an away average of 41.51 across 66 Tests in his illustrious career. It is important to note, however, that he averages precisely 30 in the two Tests he has participated in at neutral venues, specifically the World Test Championship finals against New Zealand and Australia held in England.
Among the remaining regular top-six batsmen from India's recent tour of Australia, Rishabh Pant holds the highest average at 37.59 from 29 Tests. "Players like Rahul, Shubman, and Pant need to take this into account. To be a successful Test team, three or four of your top six batsmen should ideally average close to 50," Ganguly emphasized.
'Gill needs to take his Test cricket batting much higher'
India's upcoming Test series will commence immediately following the IPL, featuring a challenging five-match tour of England that marks the beginning of their next World Test Championship cycle. "It is fundamentally about mentality, determination, and resilience. The players possess the talent. Virat Kohli is among the best in the field, and I do not anticipate him struggling in five Tests in England. Shubman Gill must elevate his performance in Test cricket," stated Ganguly.
India has secured victory in the last two ICC tournaments they participated in, winning consecutively at the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy. However, sandwiched between these triumphs was a dismal performance during the 2024/25 Test season, where India suffered a historic 3-0 defeat at home against New Zealand and subsequently lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia with a score of 3-1, ultimately resulting in their failure to qualify for the World Test Championship Final.
