The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to establish a specialized task force aimed at assisting the displaced women cricketers from Afghanistan. This announcement was made by ICC chairman Jay Shah on Sunday. The governing body of cricket has partnered with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), and Cricket Australia (CA) to provide support to these women athletes.
The ICC will facilitate the cricketing and personal development of women cricketers in Afghanistan.
Additionally, a dedicated fund will be created to offer direct financial support to Afghanistan's women cricketers. A comprehensive high-performance program will also be introduced, which will provide advanced coaching, state-of-the-art facilities, and personalized mentorship to help these athletes achieve their maximum potential.
"In the International Cricket Council, we are profoundly dedicated to promoting inclusivity and ensuring that every cricketer has the chance to excel, irrespective of their situation. Together with our esteemed partners, we are honored to initiate this task force and support fund, along with a thorough high-performance program, to enable displaced Afghan women cricketers to continue their journey in the sport," Jay Shah stated in an official announcement.
This initiative demonstrates our unwavering commitment to the global advancement of cricket and its ability to foster unity, resilience, and hope, he stated.
Previously, Human Rights Watch had called on the ICC to suspend Afghanistan and prohibit the Taliban-led nation from participating in international cricket.
"We are reaching out at this moment to request that the International Cricket Council (ICC) suspend Afghanistan, governed by the Taliban, from its membership and from competing in international cricket until women and girls are once again allowed to engage in education and sports within the country," the correspondence to Jay Shah indicated, as reported by ESPNCricinfo.
For those unfamiliar, since the Taliban regained control in Afghanistan in 2021, women have been subjected to numerous restrictive laws that prevent them from participating in sports.
Prior to the Taliban's return to power, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) had committed to contracting 25 female players, the majority of whom are now living in exile in Australia.
Temba Bavuma has been appointed to the Men's Cricket Committee. The ICC has also announced the inclusion of Jonathan Trott, the head coach of Afghanistan, in the committee.
Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has been reappointed as the Chairman of the Men's Cricket Committee.
Additionally, Avril Fahey and Pholetsi Moseki have been appointed to the ICC Women's Cricket Committee.
The complete list of appointments is as follows:
ICC Women’s Cricket Committee: Catherine Campbell (re-appointed), Avril Fahey, and Pholetsi Moseki.
ICC Men’s Cricket Committee: Sourav Ganguly (re-appointed as Chair), along with Hamid Hassan, Desmond Haynes, Temba Bavuma, VVS Laxman (re-appointed), and Jonathan Trott.
