Smriti Mandhana emerged as India's premier performer in One Day Internationals (ODIs) during 2024, leading to her recognition as the ICC Women's ODI Cricketer of the Year. The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced this accolade on Monday. Mandhana demonstrated exceptional skill against formidable opponents throughout the year, and her outstanding performances have garnered significant attention.
This marks the second occasion on which Smriti Mandhana has received the ICC's ODI Women Cricketer of the Year Award. She triumphed over notable competitors, including Sri Lanka's Chamari Athapaththu, Australia's Annabel Sutherland, and South Africa's Laura Wolvaardt.
The left-handed batswoman commenced the year with remarkable form, achieving consecutive centuries against South Africa. She further solidified her performance with a pivotal century in the series finale against New Zealand in October.
Mandhana also scored another century against the reigning ODI World Cup champions, Australia, delivering a resilient innings in Perth, although her efforts fell short of securing victory for her team.
Throughout 2024, Mandhana accumulated a total of 747 runs in 13 innings, marking her highest tally in a single calendar year. She concluded the year as the leading run-scorer, surpassing South Africa's Laura Wolvaardt (697), England's Tammy Beaumont (554), and West Indies' Hayley Matthews (469).
Mandhana achieved an impressive batting average of 57.86 and maintained a strike rate of 95.15, contributing to a consistent flow of runs for India.
Mandhana hit four centuries in 2024
Smriti Mandhana achieved a remarkable feat in 2024 by scoring four centuries in One Day Internationals, setting a new benchmark in women's cricket. Additionally, she demonstrated her prowess by crossing the boundary over 100 times last year, with a total of 95 fours and six sixes.
Her most notable performance came in December 2024, when she scored an impressive 105 runs against Australia. During this inning, she struck 14 fours and one six, while the entire Indian team managed only seven boundaries collectively.
In the same month, Mandhana also recorded two half-centuries in a series against the West Indies, with scores of 91, 53, and 4 across the three matches.
On a related note, Azmatullah Omarzai, an all-rounder from Afghanistan, was honoured as the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year for 2024 earlier on Monday.
