‘Slap Yourself 360 Times’: Suryakumar Yadav Gets No Mercy for Ongoing Struggles
1 month ago | 5 Views
Suryakumar Yadav's challenging phase in T20 internationals persists, as he once again fell short of a significant score, managing only 14 runs in the third T20I against England in Rajkot. Since assuming the captaincy from Rohit Sharma following the T20 World Cup 2024, Yadav has struggled to find his form. His performance has notably declined, with only 256 runs amassed in 13 matches at an average of 21.33. This downturn has adversely impacted his overall T20I statistics, causing his batting average to dip below 40. Across 81 T20Is, he has scored 2,596 runs at an average of 39.33, complemented by a strike rate of 167.70, including four centuries and 21 fifties, with a highest score of 117.
Additionally, he experienced a disappointing season in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, accumulating 132 runs in five innings at an average of 26.40, featuring just one half-century and a top score of 70.
In the current T20I series, the elegant batsman has recorded a series of low scores: 0, 12, and 14. During his brief seven-ball innings, he managed to hit a six and a four, beginning with a signature pick-up shot off Jofra Archer that cleared the boundary. However, Mark Wood dismissed him, as Yadav top-edged a fast, rising delivery into the hands of wicketkeeper Phil Salt.
Following his performance in Rajkot, he faced significant criticism from fans on social media.
‘Adil Rashid didn’t allow us to rotate the strike’
Varun Chakravarthy achieved his second five-wicket haul in T20 internationals, providing India with a competitive edge in the bowling department. However, England managed to surpass his impressive figures of 5-24, securing a victory over the hosts by 26 runs, thereby keeping the series competitive.
India had successfully restricted England to 127 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 16 overs but allowed them to finish their innings at 171 runs for 9 wickets in 20 overs. In their pursuit of 172 runs, the Indian team could only muster 145 runs for 9 wickets, falling short by 26 runs.
"I anticipated that there would be some dew later in the day. I believed we had control of the match when Hardik and Axar were at the crease. Adil Rashid deserves credit for his exceptional bowling; he truly is a world-class bowler. He prevented us from rotating the strike," Suryakumar remarked during the post-match presentation.
India had previously secured victories in the first two T20Is held in Kolkata and Chennai, winning by margins of seven and two wickets, respectively. The fourth match is scheduled to take place in Pune on Friday.
