The current edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has emerged as a more intense contest between India and Australia compared to the previous series, as Australia aims to reclaim their standing by securing victory in the crucial match at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

A notable incident occurred at the SCG just before the lunch interval on the first day, where Shubman Gill was seen engaging in banter with Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith, which ultimately had consequences for him.

As Gill attempted to navigate the final over before the break from Nathan Lyon, he took his time to prepare the pitch, delaying the game while Lyon was poised to deliver. Smith, positioned at slip, expressed his frustration, stating, “This is bull****,” and directly urged Gill, “Oi, let’s play.”

Gill expressed his dissatisfaction with Smith's interjection from the field and promptly responded, "You take your time, Smithy; no one addresses you." Labuschagne, positioned at leg-slip, swiftly came to the defence of his teammate and close friend, exclaiming, "Indeed, you do!" accompanied by laughter.

Labuschagne advised Smith, “Take your time, Smithy,” to which Smith replied, “Yeah, I will.”

Ultimately, it was Smith who had the final say, as his comments disrupted Gill's concentration. On the last delivery of Lyon's over, Gill attempted to defend the ball before lunch but could only manage an edge, resulting in a straightforward catch to Smith.

Gill was dismissed for a measured 20 runs off 64 balls. Despite having navigated a challenging morning session and rebuilding the innings alongside Virat Kohli upon his return, Gill would likely have felt disappointed with the nature and timing of his dismissal, occurring just before the break.

Gill returned to the team in place of Rohit Sharma, resuming the number three position, while Jasprit Bumrah assumed captaincy responsibilities as India aimed to secure a victory in Sydney and retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
