Shubman Gill on Karun Nair's Snub: 'Unfortunately, He Didn't Make the Cut'

India's ODI vice-captain, Shubman Gill, expressed disappointment that Karun Nair wasn't included in the squad for the upcoming three-match series against England, especially given his outstanding performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Leading Vidarbha in the prestigious 50-over tournament, Nair racked up an impressive 779 runs with an average of 389.5.

Nair's incredible form even caught the eye of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. His scores in the Vijay Hazare Trophy included 112*, 44*, 163*, 111*, 112, 122*, 88*, and 27.

Despite this, Gill pointed out that the players currently in the squad have also been performing well. He highlighted the middle-order's success during the 2023 ODI World Cup, where India made it to the finals.

Gill believes it's important to stick with the current batters since the team has only played three ODIs since the World Cup final against Australia.

"He definitely had a great run in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. But we have to think about who he would replace. The guys in the squad are already doing a solid job. In the ODI World Cup, every middle-order player scored between 400-500 runs. We've only played three ODIs as a team since then," Shubman Gill told reporters before the first ODI against England.

"No one has had a long stretch in the lineup. We lost the ODI World Cup final, but aside from that, the whole team has been performing consistently. I believe the players we have right now are doing well," he added.

‘There won't be any fairness'

Shubman Gill thinks that a solid team always supports its players. He feels there's no need to bench any of the current middle-order batters since they've all been performing well in ODI cricket.

"It's a shame that some players who excelled in domestic cricket haven't made the team. I really believe that if someone is coming in, there should be a spot for them. It wouldn't be fair to ask a player who's already doing well to step aside," Gill mentioned.

"If we do that, we risk losing our consistency as a team. A strong team stands by its players, and we want to avoid any feelings of insecurity among them," he continued.

On another note, Karun Nair is taking full advantage of his great form, having scored a century for Vidarbha in the second innings of their Ranji Trophy match against Hyderabad.
