Shubman Gill Prepares for New Zealand Clash with Intensive Training
14 days ago | 5 Views
India's vice-captain Shubman Gill raised some eyebrows about his availability for the final group match in the 2025 Champions Trophy against New Zealand after he was the only player to miss Wednesday's training session at the ICC Academy in Dubai. However, he quickly eased concerns by reportedly opting for a private net session on Thursday instead of taking the day off.
As per a report from the Times of India, the team had a scheduled off day on Thursday following their training the day before, which was their first practice since the victory over Pakistan. Gill, however, decided to work on his game with an "informal training session" at the ICC Academy. The report didn’t specify if other players joined him, but it mentioned that he had some throwdown specialists and a few support staff with him.
"Shubman Gill had a casual training session with support staff. Since it wasn’t an official training day, it seemed more like a personal workout. It wasn’t an extensive session and took place in the afternoon," a source close to the situation shared with the newspaper.
Gill missed training on Wednesday
The young player has been one of India's standout batters in the tournament, scoring a century in the opening match in Dubai last week against Bangladesh, which propelled him to the top of the ICC ODI batting rankings. He solidified his position with a solid 46 runs off 52 balls against Pakistan last Sunday.
However, when the Indian team gathered on Wednesday for the first time since the match against Pakistan, Gill was the only one absent. This immediately raised concerns about his fitness ahead of the game against the Black Caps, who are currently leading the Group A standings after victories over Bangladesh and Pakistan. Reports indicate that Gill will participate in India's training session on Friday, the last one before facing New Zealand.
All eyes will be on India’s captain Rohit Sharma, who didn’t engage in much physical activity on Wednesday and opted for some light jogging instead. It was reported that he suffered a hamstring issue during the match against Pakistan.
