Shubman Gill Eyes 300 in IPL 2025, Excited About Titans’ Power-Packed Squad
1 day ago | 5 Views
Gujarat Titans' captain Shubman Gill expressed his belief that scoring 300 runs in a match is only a matter of time in the Indian Premier League (IPL), and he anticipates that this milestone could be achieved in the upcoming season, which begins on March 22. Notably, nine of the ten highest scores in IPL history were recorded in the previous season, where the 250-run mark was surpassed on nine occasions, along with three additional scores in the 240s. In one remarkable match, the Punjab Kings successfully chased down 262 runs against the Kolkata Knight Riders with eight balls remaining.
Gill highlighted that the introduction of the Impact Player rule enables teams to include an additional batter or bowler based on their strategic needs, contributing to the increase in overall scores. "The pace of the game has escalated to a level where scoring 300 in a match seems feasible. Last year, we came very close several times. The Impact Player rule enhances the excitement and makes the IPL even more captivating," Gill stated during an interview on JioHotstar.
As the vice-captain of the Indian ODI team, Shubman Gill noted that the IPL consistently discovers new and thrilling talents each year, despite various challenges. "One of the most remarkable features of the IPL is that a new star seems to emerge daily. You frequently see underrated players delivering outstanding performances. The tournament's format, characterized by frequent matches and travel, keeps players actively engaged. When a team is winning, the momentum can lead to three, four, or even five consecutive victories. However, injuries can complicate matters. When one or two key players are sidelined, finding adequate replacements can be challenging. Nevertheless, the IPL remains the most exhilarating cricket event, with each season offering something fresh for both players and fans."
Gill assumed the captaincy of the Gujarat Titans last year after Hardik Pandya's notable transfer back to the Mumbai Indians. In his inaugural season as captain, Gill amassed 426 runs at a strike rate of 147. Despite his impressive performance, it was insufficient to propel the Titans into the playoffs, as the 2022 champions finished eighth in the standings with six victories out of 14 matches.
Gill evolving as a leader
Discussing his growth as a leader, Gill remarked, "I view leadership as an ongoing journey. Each match and week offers new insights. Different players contribute unique perspectives, teaching me not only about leadership but also about themselves. A leader's primary task is to comprehend what allows each player to excel. Since every player is unique, effective leadership involves managing them appropriately. It is vital to understand their strengths and weaknesses and to know how to help them regain their form during challenging times. The more matches you play, the more experiences you accumulate, both positive and negative, which ultimately shape your leadership style. Engaging in one-on-one discussions with teammates is crucial. Initially, I wasn't inclined to initiate such conversations, but I recognized the importance of making a deliberate effort as a leader. Communicating with players, grasping their mindset, and ensuring they feel appreciated is essential. When a team leader reaches out, it fosters confidence among the players and contributes to a robust team atmosphere."
Regarding whether captaincy entails additional responsibilities, Gill stated, "As a batsman, my focus on the field should solely be on my batting. If I allow thoughts of my leadership duties to intrude while batting, it can detract from my performance. Batting is a personal contest between myself and the bowler, while fielding requires a collective effort. Leadership is more significant in fielding and team strategy. Regardless of my role as captain, my primary objective when batting remains the same: to secure victories for my team. Last year, there were instances when I overanalyzed situations, which negatively impacted my performance. The main lesson for me has been to distinguish between captaincy and batting, approaching my game with a focused mindset."
This year, GT has significantly strengthened its roster by adding several notable players. The mega auction saw the acquisition of Jos Buttler, Glenn Phillips, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Kagiso Rabada, and Gerald Coetzee. "Our fast-bowling lineup is formidable. Rashid has been a consistent presence, and we boast explosive batsmen such as Rutherford, Phillips, and Buttler. Additionally, talented Indian players like Mahipal and Sai enhance our squad's depth. Achieving success in a lengthy tournament like the IPL hinges on maintaining balance. Experiencing two or three consecutive losses is not overly concerning if the team is performing well and making informed choices. Consistency in team selection and strategy is vital. The more decisions are based on probability and logic, the higher the likelihood of qualifying. Once in the knockout phase, it is essential to adopt an aggressive and positive approach. In all the qualifiers and finals I have participated in, I have observed that teams with the right mindset have the greatest chance of success."
