Former cricketer Aakash Chopra has identified potential candidates for the next captain of Team India following Rohit Sharma's tenure. The recent Test series defeats against Australia and New Zealand have placed Rohit under scrutiny, particularly as he opted to rest during the final Test in Australia after a series of disappointing performances. Jasprit Bumrah demonstrated leadership capabilities during the Perth Test; however, concerns regarding his long-term fitness arose after he sustained a back injury in the final match of the tour.
Chopra has highlighted Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant as the primary contenders for the future captaincy of the Indian cricket team.
"Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant - which of the two can assume the captaincy? It is an intriguing question because, according to sources, Rohit has indicated that he will lead the team for a limited time, after which the BCCI can select a successor. Given Bumrah's potential injury issues, the decision is ultimately yours," Chopra stated on his YouTube channel.
Additionally, reports have indicated that Gautam Gambhir, the current head coach of India, is keen on promoting Jaiswal into the leadership group following his commendable performance during the Australian tour.
In the meantime, Chopra proposed a short-term strategy, recommending that the team management appoint Jasprit Bumrah as captain for the upcoming Test series in England, while also designating a vice-captain for development purposes.
"I believe we should reassess in six months. If Jasprit Bumrah leads the entire England tour, it is essential to appoint a vice-captain thoughtfully, as grooming is necessary. To be candid, when we won the T20 World Cup, it appeared that the grooming process was progressing effectively," he remarked.
‘Shubman Gill is not coming in the T20 format at all’
He further pointed out that the management did try to elevate Shubman Gill for the leadership role by naming him the vice-captain in the white-ball formats after the T20 World Cup, but things have changed for him now. The 25-year-old was dropped from the XI in the Boxing Day Test and was not picked in the squad for the T20Is against England, which indicates that he has been dropped down in the pecking order for the leadership role.
"Everything looked fine. Shubman Gill was being made the vice-captain. He was regularly being assigned that role and then suddenly Shubman Gill was dropped. So pressure was put on him as to what was happening as he is potentially not coming in the captaincy thoughts and is not coming in the T20 format at all," Chopra elaborated.
