Shubman Gill Defends Team India: 'One Series Doesn't Define Us'

India's Shubman Gill, recently appointed vice-captain for the upcoming ODIs against England and the Champions Trophy, downplayed his team's loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He emphasized that a single series loss doesn't reflect the overall performance of the team. With India facing scrutiny after losing the Test series to Australia for the first time in a decade, questions are swirling around Rohit Sharma and the squad.

After suffering consecutive Test series defeats to New Zealand and Australia, India will miss out on the World Test Championship (WTC) final for the first time.

Now, the spotlight shifts to the white-ball formats, and it remains to be seen if Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir's team can clinch the Champions Trophy, which kicks off on February 19 in Karachi.

India's first match in the tournament is set for February 20 against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Stadium.

"One series doesn’t determine the form of the entire team. Many players have consistently performed well in various series and tournaments in the past," Gill shared with reporters in Nagpur ahead of the first ODI against England. "Sure, we didn’t meet our expectations in the Australian series, but we still showcased some good cricket," he added.

'It's a bummer that we don't have Bumrah with us'

Jasprit Bumrah really shone in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, taking 32 wickets. Unfortunately, he had to deal with back spasms during the Sydney Test, which meant he couldn't help India defend a less-than-ideal total in the final innings.

"We were really unlucky not to have Bumrah on the last day. If he had been there, we could have won the match, and the series would have ended in a draw, so we wouldn't even be having this conversation," Gill mentioned.

"One match and one day don’t define who we are. We've won there twice before, plus we’ve clinched a World Cup and made it to another final, so we should remember all those achievements," he added.

Shubman Gill recently hit a century in the second innings of Punjab's Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka. He’s looking to keep that momentum going into the ODI series against England and the Champions Trophy.
