Shubman Gill Addresses ‘Toxic Competition’ Claims with Abhishek & Jaiswal
1 month ago | 5 Views
Abhishek Sharma's remarkable century and his recent performances have ignited discussions regarding his continued position at the top of the order for India in T20 internationals, even with the anticipated returns of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. This has also raised inquiries about his absence from the Indian ODI squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy. In light of the growing competition for places in the Indian top order, Gill has emphasized that his rapport with both Abhishek and Jaiswal remains unchanged, expressing a collective desire for each other's success as they represent their country.
"Abhishek is a childhood friend of mine. Jaiswal is also a friend, and I don't perceive any unhealthy rivalry among us. Naturally, when representing the country, one aims to excel in every match, without wishing for another's failure. Our focus is on the team and the nation, and we celebrate each other's achievements," Gill remarked.
Abhishek emerged as the leading scorer in the series against England, significantly bolstered by his record-setting 135 runs off just 54 balls in the fifth T20I. The 24-year-old concluded the series with a total of 279 runs across five matches, boasting an extraordinary strike rate of 219.68 and an average of 55.80.
'Not taking England series as practice for Champions Trophy'
Gill and Jaiswal were India's preferred opening partnership during the series against Sri Lanka last year, marking the first series following Rohit Sharma's retirement from T20 internationals. Subsequently, they were absent from the series against South Africa and the recently completed series against England, both of which were sandwiched between an extensive and challenging Test tour of Australia.
Gill is set to return to international cricket with a three-match ODI series against England, which serves as a precursor to the Champions Trophy. Jaiswal is included in the squad, and it remains uncertain whether he will make his ODI debut during this series.
"We are facing a strong opponent in this three-match ODI series, and we do not view it merely as preparation for the Champions Trophy. This series is of great significance to us, and we aim to assert our dominance and secure victory just as we would in any other series," stated Gill.
