Shubhankar Sharma Aims for Victory in International Series at DLF Golf Club

New Delhi: Statistically, Shubhankar Sharma has demonstrated a commendable level of consistency in 2024, successfully making the cut in 21 out of 26 tournaments and achieving two top-10 finishes on Europe’s DP World Tour. However, for a player who has been actively competing in Europe for the past six years, merely making the cut is no longer a source of satisfaction.

“It has been a steady season, but it is time for me to secure a victory on the tour. It has genuinely been a long time,” acknowledged Sharma, 28, who recorded two victories on the European tour within a two-month span in 2017-18.

Currently in the UAE for the DP World Tour’s Ras Al Khaimah Championship commencing on Thursday, Shubhankar is poised to enhance his tally of 10 professional wins across various tours as he competes alongside a formidable lineup led by Bryson DeChambeau at the $2 million International Series event at Gurugram’s DLF Golf and Country Club next week.

Having grown up on the challenging course, Shubhankar believes that the debut of the International Series will significantly boost the profile of golf in India.

“In the past, we used to host 3-4 prominent international events in India, but in recent years, we have only seen the Hero Indian Open. I am truly pleased that we now have another event featuring a star-studded field on a world-class course like DLF. This is significant not only for the fans but also for us players who aspire to see Indian golf flourish and gain international recognition. Hosting an event of this calibre is the best way to achieve that,” he stated.

With renowned players such as the powerful DeChambeau and Chile’s International Series Rankings winner Joaquin Niemann among the 15 LIV tour stars participating, Shubhankar faces challenging competition. His performance at the beginning of the year has been inconsistent, as he failed to make the cut at last week’s Hero Dubai Desert Classic, which does little to bolster his confidence.

Moreover, the daunting DLF course, which faced criticism for its unusually difficult and fast conditions during the Hero Women’s Indian Open last October, presents an additional challenge for the local competitor.
