Shreyas Iyer's Unsung Heroics: Ambati Rayudu Highlights His Crucial Role in India's Middle Order

Shreyas Iyer has solidified his spot in the ODI lineup once again after consistently performing well in recent games. After making his comeback to the Indian squad during the ODIs against England, he has crossed the 50-run mark four times in just six matches.

Over the past year and a half in domestic cricket, he’s fine-tuned his technique, showcasing his skills when it mattered most. In a crucial Champions Trophy match against New Zealand, he stepped up to help India recover from a tough position, contributing to a respectable total.

When India lost their top order early, Shreyas anchored the innings and formed a vital 98-run partnership with Axar Patel. He narrowly missed out on a century, finishing with 79 runs off 98 balls, balancing aggression with caution perfectly.

Former Indian player Ambati Rayudu, who played at number 4, emphasized the need for a reliable batsman in that position to stabilize the innings when the top order struggles.

"The role of a No. 4 batsman is crucial. You need someone to step up and play important innings when the top order falters, especially on tough pitches. That’s why No. 4 and No. 5 are so vital in ODIs," Rayudu mentioned on JioHotstar.

Shreyas Iyer did a great job dealing with the short balls, according to Rayudu

He really stepped up his game against the short balls, which used to be a bit of a struggle for him. Rayudu even mentioned this while giving his thoughts on Iyer's innings.

"Shreyas had an incredible innings, and his partnership with Axar Patel was key. The way he handled the pitch was impressive. He dealt with the short balls effectively until he got out and played spin beautifully, using the crease and angles to his advantage. He read the pace of the ball way better than a lot of others in the Indian lineup," he said.

The former CSK player also noted that Iyer doesn’t get as much recognition as some of the other players.

"It was an outstanding performance, and he’s been a star at No. 4. We don’t give him enough credit, but he’s made a significant impact on this Indian team," he wrapped up.
