Karnataka had a tall order ahead of them, needing to chase down a hefty 383 in their first match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. They pulled off an incredible feat against Mumbai, who are the reigning Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy champions, with a chase that nearly set a record. Wicketkeeper Krishan Shrijith was the star of the show, smashing an impressive 150* off just 101 balls, leading Karnataka to a convincing 7-wicket victory at the Narendra Modi Stadium B Ground in Ahmedabad.
This chase marked the second-highest total ever chased in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match, falling just one run short of Andhra Pradesh's 384 against Goa back in the 2011/12 season. It also ranks as the fifth-highest List A chase in history, with South Africa's legendary 435 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2005 still holding the top spot.
Karnataka puts up a solid pursuit.
Karnataka's batting lineup really stepped up during the chase. Nikin Jose might have only put up 21 runs, but he set a solid tone right from the beginning. Captain Mayank Agarwal played it smart, navigating the new ball and laying a strong foundation with a solid 47 runs.
Then KV Aneesh took charge, smashing a quick 82 against Mumbai's bowlers, keeping Karnataka ahead of the required run rate. Shrijith came in and kept the momentum going, finishing with an impressive 150 that featured four sixes and an incredible 20 fours.
Even though Aneesh got out and Mumbai was back in the game with Karnataka needing 183 runs off 141 balls, Praveen Dubey stepped up to keep Karnataka ahead of the required run rate. He teamed up well with Shrijith, scoring an impressive unbeaten 65 off 50 balls. In the end, Shrijith stole the spotlight as Karnataka chased down the target with 22 balls to spare.
Earlier, Shreyas Iyer had an amazing innings, scoring 114* off just 55 balls, while Shivam Dube was also smashing it with his power hitting. At the halfway mark, Mumbai probably thought they had set a solid total, but Karnataka kept the pressure on a relatively inexperienced bowling lineup, making sure they stayed in the game. Mumbai tried out eight different bowlers, but things got worse for them when their main bowler, Shardul Thakur, gave away 72 runs in just 6 overs.
