'Shreyas Iyer didn't get credit...': Gavaskar's fiery takedown of KKR's IPL 2024 title victory

Shreyas Iyer's exceptional half-century propelled the Punjab Kings to a commanding eight-wicket victory over the Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday. The PBKS captain remained unbeaten on 52 runs off just 30 deliveries, hitting three fours and four sixes, demonstrating an aggressive approach during his innings. In pursuit of 172 runs, the match was effectively decided once Shreyas took control, following a rapid 69 from the dynamic Prabhsimran Singh.

The Punjab Kings completed the match in a mere 16.2 overs, thanks to their unwavering performance with both bat and ball.

In addition to the impressive display on the field, a significant moment arose from the commentary booth as the legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar shared his thoughts on Shreyas Iyer’s career. Gavaskar praised Iyer's batting skills and made an important observation regarding the upcoming 2024 IPL season.

He noted that while Iyer captained Kolkata Knight Riders to the title, he did not receive adequate recognition for this accomplishment. Gavaskar stated, “Shreyas was the captain of the KKR side that won in 2024, and I believe he did not get the credit he deserved. His captaincy record is quite impressive,” as reported by NDTV.

Iyer has delivered outstanding performances in the IPL, domestic cricket, and for India in ODIs, playing a crucial role in the team's recent Champions Trophy victory. Despite his success during the IPL-winning season in 2024, KKR released him, and the franchise opted out of bidding when his price reached INR 10 crore at the auction. Ultimately, PBKS acquired the batter for a staggering INR 26.75 crore.

A cruising win for PBKS

PBKS put LSG under significant pressure throughout the match on Tuesday, as their batting performance mirrored the struggles of their captain, Rishabh Pant. After slipping to 39/3 during the batting powerplay, LSG found themselves consistently on the defensive, with Punjab's bowlers—Arshdeep Singh (3/43), Lockie Ferguson (1/26), and Marco Jansen (1/28)—taking full advantage of the conditions.

The top order of LSG displayed poor shot selection and a lack of focus, which proved too challenging for the middle order to overcome. Although Nicholas Pooran (44 off 30) and Ayush Badoni (41 off 33) provided some temporary resistance, Punjab's bowlers effectively curtailed their efforts, preventing any significant momentum from building.
