Shreyas Iyer Urges Prithvi Shaw to Enhance Work Ethic for Comeback

Star batsman Shreyas Iyer has encouraged Prithvi Shaw to concentrate on improving his work ethic in order to regain his position in the Indian cricket team. Once regarded as a promising talent in Indian cricket, Shaw has faced challenges in securing a spot on Mumbai's domestic team lately. He was excluded from the Mumbai squad led by Iyer for the recently held Vijay Hazare Trophy. The 25-year-old was part of the Mumbai team that triumphed in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, accumulating 197 runs at an average of 21.88. Although he achieved a commendable strike rate of 156.34, his performance lacked consistency, with his highest score being 49 off 26 balls during the quarter-final against Vidarbha.

Iyer, who has previously captained Shaw on multiple occasions, acknowledged Shaw's natural talent but emphasized the importance of a strong work ethic to help him regain his form.

"Prithvi Shaw began his career on a promising note. He possesses an exceptional ability to time the ball and score runs rapidly. Everyone in the team recognizes his extraordinary talent. Therefore, he must prioritize his work ethic, and success will follow. He is truly God-gifted," Iyer stated in an interview with The Indian Express.

Prithvi Shaw unsold in IPL Auction

He remained unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction, despite setting a modest base price of INR 50 Lakh, as no franchise opted to bid for him. In recent seasons, he has faced challenges in securing a consistent place in Delhi's playing XI due to his erratic performance and fitness issues. Last season, he accumulated 198 runs across eight matches, averaging 24.75, with a strike rate of 163.64, which included just one half-century.

Shaw, who made his international debut in 2018 after leading India to triumph in the U19 World Cup, has played for India in only five Test matches, six One Day Internationals, and one T20 International. His career has been hindered by inconsistent form, injuries, and disciplinary problems, resulting in a decline in his selection prospects. In contrast, several players who were part of his U19 World Cup team, such as Shubman Gill and Arshdeep Singh, have become regulars in the Indian national team across various formats, while Abhishek Sharma and Riyan Parag have established themselves in T20Is.
