Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the captain of Punjab Kings for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. During the IPL 2025 auction, Punjab Kings aggressively pursued Iyer, ultimately securing his services for an impressive INR 26.75 crore, making him the second most expensive player in the league's history. Iyer previously led Kolkata Knight Riders to a championship victory last year but chose to enter the auction, where multiple franchises competed fiercely for him. However, PBKS, possessing the largest budget, successfully acquired him.
In their quest for their first IPL title, Punjab opted for a captain with prior experience in achieving success. The announcement was made by actor Salman Khan during the reality television show 'Bigg Boss,' where Iyer appeared as a guest alongside Yuzvendra Chahal.
Iyer, along with Yuzvendra Chahal and Shashank Singh, attended the popular reality show Bigg Boss, where the significant announcement was revealed by Bollywood superstar Salman Khan.
The 30-year-old expressed his appreciation to the Punjab Kings management, stating, “I am honoured that the team has placed their trust in me. I am eager to collaborate once more with Coach Ponting. The team appears robust, featuring an excellent blend of potential and established performers. I aim to justify the confidence shown by the management and help secure our first title.”
Iyer had an outstanding year in domestic cricket, being part of the Mumbai team that clinched the Ranji Trophy for the 42nd time. He also led KKR to their third IPL title and was a member of the Irani Cup-winning Mumbai squad. Under his captaincy, Mumbai triumphed in the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, marking their second SMAT title this season.
Head Coach Ricky commented, "Shreyas possesses a keen understanding of the game. His established leadership skills will be instrumental in guiding the team to success. I have enjoyed my previous experiences with Iyer in the IPL and look forward to collaborating with him again. With his leadership and the talent within the squad, I am enthusiastic about the upcoming seasons."
