Shreyas Iyer Reveals Emotional Moment During Champions Trophy Practice

India's batsman Shreyas Iyer experienced a wave of frustration, anger, and tears during his initial practice session in Dubai, just days before the Champions Trophy commenced in February. Iyer had anticipated seamlessly continuing from his performance in the preceding home series against England, but he was taken aback by his emotional response as he struggled to adjust to the conditions in Dubai.
In an episode of Kandid with Kings, Iyer recounted the last time he cried when asked about it. As many had predicted, the Champions Trophy became a significant tournament for Iyer, who emerged as India's leading run-scorer with 243 runs across five innings, averaging 48.60. He ranked as the second-highest run-scorer overall, trailing only New Zealand's Rachin Ravindra, who scored 263 runs.
"I last cried during the Champions Trophy, specifically in the first practice session. I was literally crying because my performance in the nets was disappointing. I was so frustrated with myself that I broke down. I was also surprised by my emotional reaction, as I don't typically cry easily," he shared.
Despite a strong showing in the three-match series against England at home, where he amassed 181 runs, Iyer faced challenges in the nets. This performance had previously quelled any doubts regarding his position at No. 4 in the Indian batting order.
"I expected to maintain the same momentum, but the pitches were different, and adapting on the first day proved to be quite challenging," Shreyas Iyer explained. "After practice concluded, I wanted to put in some extra work, but I didn't get the opportunity, which further fueled my frustration," he added.
How has Shreyas Iyer fared in IPL 2025?
Iyer has successfully transitioned his momentum into the T20 format, now representing the Punjab Kings. During the mega auction held last November, he was acquired for a record sum of INR 26.75 crore, making him the second-highest priced player in IPL history, just behind Rishabh Pant, who was signed by the Lucknow Super Giants for ₹27 crore. Subsequently, Iyer was appointed as the team captain.
As a leader, Iyer has excelled both with the bat and in his captaincy. He has amassed 159 runs in three innings, including two half-centuries, at an impressive strike rate of 206.49. Under his guidance, Punjab, still in pursuit of their first IPL title, has achieved two victories in their first three matches.
