Shreyas Iyer Reflects on Being Called a 'Silent Hero': 'Sometimes My Efforts Go Unnoticed'
1 month ago | 5 Views
Shreyas Iyer has once again proven himself as one of India's top No. 4 batters in ODI cricket during an ICC tournament. Following an impressive performance in the 2023 World Cup, where he racked up 530 runs in 11 matches—the highest by an Indian No. 4 in any World Cup—he continued to shine as the leading run-scorer for India in the recent Champions Trophy. Iyer scored 243 runs in five innings, helping India secure the trophy for the third time in history.
After the tournament, India’s captain Rohit Sharma referred to Iyer as the team's "silent hero." In a crucial match against New Zealand in Dubai, Iyer contributed significantly with 48 runs off 62 balls, aiding India in chasing down 252 runs with an over to spare.
Iyer expressed his happiness over Rohit's acknowledgment, emphasizing the importance of respect for his hard work. He mentioned, "Recognition means a lot to me. It’s about the respect for the effort I put in. Sometimes it goes unnoticed, but I’m really proud of what I achieved, especially on tough pitches. It wasn’t easy to score singles with the bowlers being so tight. I believed that if I could hit a couple of sixes, I could shift the momentum in our favor, and thankfully, I managed to do that at key moments," he shared in an interview with Times of India.
Iyer is looking to make a comeback in Test cricket
Iyer is now setting his sights on making a comeback to the Indian Test team after another impressive performance in white-ball cricket. He was dropped from the squad in early 2024 during the home series against England and hasn't been called back, even after shining in the 2024/25 Ranji Trophy season.
"I definitely want to play as much as possible. I've performed well in domestic tournaments, but we'll see what happens. I try not to overthink it because the more I dwell on it, the more it tires me out. I focus on the present, enjoy myself, and think about the match when it arrives. I don’t stress about the future or the past. That mindset has really helped me," he shared.
