Shreyas Iyer, Ponting Urged to Drop Maxwell: ‘He’s Had His Run, Show No Mercy’
7 days ago | 5 Views
Despite winning three out of five matches, Punjab Kings have yet to perform at their best. Glenn Maxwell has not made a significant impact, and his batting in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has been underwhelming. Former New Zealand fast bowler Simon Doull has suggested that captain Shreyas Iyer and coach Ricky Ponting should consider sidelining the all-rounder, as his time may have come to an end.
In four innings during IPL 2025, Maxwell has scored 0, 30, 1, and 3, totaling just 34 runs, while taking three wickets with the ball.
He has not shown his usual form and has struggled to settle at the crease. Although he managed 30 runs against the Rajasthan Royals, his performance lacked fluidity.
Doull believes it is time for Punjab Kings to place their trust in Azmatullah Omarzai or Josh Inglis instead of Maxwell. It is worth noting that throughout his career, Maxwell has only had one or two seasons where he has truly met expectations in the IPL.
'I think Maxwell has had his run. Just the way he's getting out right now would frustrate me as a coach,' Doull remarked on Cricbuzz.
'That is the disappointing aspect from their perspective. Therefore, I would consider Omarzai or Inglis as replacements for him,' he added.
Lockie Ferguson would be a big miss
Lockie Ferguson, the pacer for Punjab Kings, is nearly certain to miss IPL 2025 due to an injury sustained in the recent match against SunRisers Hyderabad.
Doull expresses that Ferguson's absence will significantly impact the Shreyas Iyer-led team, and it will be intriguing to observe who they select to fill his position.
'Losing Lockie Ferguson is a substantial setback for them. He bowled only two deliveries in that match, which could have influenced the outcome of the run chase. They had to rely on Stoinis and others when they would have preferred Lockie's speed during the middle overs,' Doull remarked.
'With his unavailability, the team now faces a gap in their fast bowling resources,' he further noted.
