Shreyas Iyer Expresses Frustration Over Criticism of Short Ball Tactics: "Who Hasn't Encountered a 150 km/h Delivery?"

Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has shared his thoughts regarding the external criticism he faces concerning his vulnerability to short-pitch bowling. Following several instances where his difficulties with short deliveries were highlighted, Iyer lost his position in the Indian Test team. Nevertheless, the selectors continue to show confidence in his abilities in the 50-over format, as evidenced by his selection for the Champions Trophy.

At the age of 30, Iyer returned to domestic cricket to restore his form, achieving significant runs across various formats to re-establish his place in the national team’s plans.

Iyer recently conveyed his frustration regarding the discussions surrounding his challenges with short balls, acknowledging that while individuals are entitled to express their opinions about players, such critiques should not be directed at the players themselves.

“It’s frustrating, particularly when the comments come from those who have never faced a delivery at 150 km per hour, suggesting how I should play,” Shreyas Iyer remarked during the Indian Express’ Idea Exchange.

“However, I recognize that it is their perspective. They are entitled to their views, but such discussions should remain among themselves rather than being directed at the player,” he added.

In the meantime, the Indian team is optimistic that Iyer will carry forward his impressive form from the 2023 ODI World Cup into the Champions Trophy. During the 2023 tournament, he amassed 530 runs in 11 innings, which included two centuries and three half-centuries.

In discussing the World Cup, Iyer highlighted a particularly significant performance, which was not the century scored in the semifinal against New Zealand, but rather his 82-run innings against Sri Lanka during the group stage.

“The 82 against Sri Lanka stands out. There was considerable speculation regarding my potential exclusion from the squad, and concerns about my contributions to the team,” he remarked.

“Despite having scored a half-century against Pakistan, the discussions surrounding my performance placed me in a challenging position. Such discourse ignited my inner drive.

Reflecting on this pivotal innings, Iyer expressed that it led him to become an admirer of his own performance due to the manner in which he played.

“I aimed to give my utmost effort. In that match, I resolved to trust my instincts and play with full intensity. There was no turning back. I was truly impressed with my performance in that game. I became my own fan after that. It was a transformative innings, particularly in the context of the World Cup," he concluded.
