Shreyas Iyer Compared to a 'Rolls Royce': Yet to Hit Top Speed Despite Stellar Performance

Punjab Kings' head coach Ricky Ponting had high praise for his captain Shreyas Iyer, referring to him as a 'Rolls-Royce' after he notched up another unbeaten half-century, leading his team to their second consecutive victory. The elegant batsman has been at the forefront of his new team, amassing 149 runs over two matches with an impressive strike rate of 206.94, and he remains unbeaten. In the match against Lucknow Super Giants, Iyer played it safe yet still managed to maintain a strike rate of 173.33, scoring 52 runs off 30 balls, which included 3 fours and 4 sixes, one of which brought him to his fifty.

His steady presence in the middle allowed young players Prabhsimran Singh and Nehal Wadhera to play aggressively, making the chase look easy for Punjab.

Ponting, who began his coaching role with Punjab this year, commended Iyer for guiding the team to victory. He noted that the 'Rolls-Royce' operated smoothly in third gear, which was exactly what was needed.

“Skipper (Iyer) made it look easy again. The Rolls-Royce just cruised in third gear for most of the day. No need to push harder than that. He just steered the ship home. You still haven’t got an average yet,” Ponting mentioned in a video shared by Punjab Kings on X.

In the meantime, opener Prabhsimran Singh laid the groundwork for a successful chase with his impressive 69 runs off just 34 balls, featuring nine fours and three sixes, all at an astonishing strike rate of 202.94.

Ponting mentioned that Prabhsimran has gained a wealth of knowledge

Ponting praised the opening batter for reflecting on his past mistakes and delivering a strong performance that was crucial for his team's victory.

"Prabhsimran, I believe you've gained a lot of insight about yourself this week. You've shown everyone what a top player you are. We often discuss the importance of making an impact, right? In a T20 match, it's all about seizing the moment and influencing the game when you have the chance," he remarked.

With two wins out of two matches, Punjab is currently sitting in second place on the leaderboard and will take on Rajasthan Royals in Chandigarh this Saturday.
