Shock Exit for Mumbai: J&K Stuns Defending Champions in Ranji Trophy

Mumbai: It was a thrilling day in the Ranji Trophy as Jammu and Kashmir pulled off a stunning upset against the 42-time champions, Mumbai, while Haryana made a strong statement by crushing Bengal to secure their spot in the quarter-finals. Over in Bengaluru, national selectors finally spotted an Indian batter in form, with Shubman Gill scoring a solid hundred against Karnataka, even though his team ended up on the losing side.
This marked J&K's second win over Mumbai in the tournament, with a decade between victories, both happening in Mumbai. Their last triumph was back in December 2014. This latest win was particularly sweet, as it came against a full-strength Mumbai lineup, featuring India captain Rohit Sharma. Now, the defending champions are in a tight spot, needing to beat Meghalaya with a bonus point in their final league match and hoping J&K can secure a win over Baroda to keep their knockout stage dreams alive.
After a tough match against Shardul Thakur and Tanush Kotian the day before, the J&K pacers came back strong and quickly took down the duo on Day 3, wrapping up Mumbai's second innings at 290, just 16 runs more than their overnight score. The batters then kept their cool, with Kanhaiya Wadhawan and Abid Mushtaq putting together an unbeaten 48-run partnership for the sixth wicket, successfully chasing down the 205-run target. Yudhvir Singh, Umar Nazir, and Auqib Nabi were the stars with the ball, claiming 19 out of 20 Mumbai wickets throughout the match.
Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane commented, "We checked out their fast-bowling unit on video. They’ve been doing a great job, hitting their lines and reading the conditions well. Honestly, we didn’t think the ball would seam that much, but they bowled exceptionally."
On the other hand, Punjab's skipper Gill must be feeling a bit let down as his century in the second innings didn’t change the outcome of the match. He was the lone warrior as his team crumbled to 213, giving Karnataka a massive innings and 207-run victory. Still, that hundred will definitely help him in future India games. Gill played patiently at first while Karnataka tried to attack with the ball reversing, but once he found his rhythm, he looked solid. Unfortunately, a wrong call from the umpire cut his innings short at 102.
In Thiruvananthapuram, Rajat Patidar, another player eyeing an India spot, scored a solid 92 for Madhya Pradesh, setting Kerala a challenging target of 336 runs. With 335 runs needed on the final day and 9 wickets in hand, Kerala is on the hunt for a win to enhance their chances in the knockout stage.
