Shoaib Strikes Back: 'Who Left the Legacy, Hafeez? You?'
7 days ago | 5 Views
Former Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar did not hesitate to criticize Mohammad Hafeez for his comments regarding the legacy of cricketers from the 1990s. During the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025, both Akhtar and Hafeez participated in a panel discussion on a news channel, where Hafeez expressed his discontent with notable players such as Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, and Inzamam-ul-Haq for their inability to secure an ICC title.
Hafeez remarked that while Pakistan had frequently triumphed in bilateral series, the team failed to clinch any ICC event during the 1990s, which adversely affected its legacy.
He acknowledged his admiration for the 1990s cricketers but emphasized that their legacy is marred by the absence of an ICC trophy. Despite participating in the World Cups of 1996, 1999, and 2003, the team fell short each time, with the 1999 final being particularly disappointing. Hafeez noted that although these players were celebrated as megastars, they did not manage to inspire victory in an ICC event.
Following a challenging period, the team finally achieved success in 2009 under Younis Khan's captaincy, which served to motivate the next generation.
Hafeez's remarks sparked significant discussion, prompting Waqar Younis to seemingly address them by posting a photo with Wasim Akram on X (formerly Twitter), along with their bowling statistics.
Akhtar fires back at Hafeez
Shoaib Akhtar may not have made significant comments in response to Hafeez's controversial statements, yet he has not overlooked the remarks regarding the legacy of the 1990s team. Previously, during a panel discussion with the former captain of Pakistan, Akhtar responded by emphasizing the team's achievements, specifically noting their 70 ODI victories against India during the 1990s.
In a post-match analysis segment of the PSL titled 'The Dugout,' Akhtar offered a pointed rebuttal, scrutinizing Hafeez's claims.
'There were numerous occasions when Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis secured victories for us in matches and series. In fact, I recall that this duo alone has contributed to at least 60 wins.
I was reminded of the statement regarding the '90s players. My apologies,' Akhtar remarked. He continued, 'That individual (Hafeez) is suggesting to Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, 'Sir, you did not leave a legacy.' If that is the case, then who is responsible for leaving a legacy? You?' It is important to note that Hafeez made this assertion following Pakistan's early exit from the ICC Men's Champions Trophy during the group stage.
