Shoaib Akhtar Urges Jasprit Bumrah to Focus on Limited Overs, Suggests Quitting Test Cricket

Shoaib Akhtar addressed Jasprit Bumrah's position in Test cricket, voicing concerns regarding his long-term viability in this format. He emphasized the necessity for Bumrah to enhance his pace to maintain competitiveness with the red ball.
Although Bumrah boasts an impressive Test average of 20.01 and has delivered numerous outstanding performances that have solidified his reputation as a star across all formats at the age of 31, Akhtar suggested that a shift away from Test cricket might be forthcoming.
During his appearance on The Nakash Khan Show podcast, the former Pakistani fast bowler shared his insights: “He is an excellent fast bowler in limited-overs formats, as he comprehends the required lengths. He excels in death overs and powerplay situations, demonstrating the ability to swing the ball in both directions.”
“However, in Test cricket, longer spells are essential. Pace is crucial since batters are not actively trying to attack you,” Akhtar elaborated. “The significance of length diminishes. If the ball fails to seam or reverse, coupled with insufficient pace, one may encounter difficulties. When struggles arise, scrutiny inevitably follows.”
‘If he wants to continue playing Test cricket…’
In the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah has achieved a total of 185 Test wickets across 42 matches, with only one other player surpassing him in terms of wickets taken at a superior average. Akhtar emphasized Bumrah's potential to be an exceptional seamer but also highlighted that his fitness issues may hinder his ability to maintain a prolonged career in Test cricket.
"I believe he possesses the capability to take wickets in Test matches. Although his performance in the Test series against New Zealand was not remarkable, such occurrences are not uncommon," Akhtar remarked. "However, if he intends to persist in Test cricket, he must enhance his bowling speed. Increasing his pace carries a significant risk of injury. If I were in his position, I would focus on shorter formats."
"It ultimately depends on my physical condition. If I feel well, I will go out there, put in the effort, and ensure I take wickets for the team in Test matches. That is acceptable to me, but he must prioritize his health, as he aspires to participate in the IPL, ODIs, and Test matches," Akhtar added.
Nevertheless, the Pakistani fast bowler concluded his commentary on Bumrah with a note of optimism regarding his significance in the sport. "He is a tremendous asset to world cricket, and we must ensure that we do not jeopardize his career by failing to take proper care of him," Akhtar stated.
