Former Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Akhtar delivered a scathing critique of captain Mohammad Rizwan during a live television broadcast, labeling him "abnormal" following Pakistan's disappointing exit from the Champions Trophy after a defeat to India on Sunday.
In his remarks on PTV, Akhtar expressed his frustration regarding the Rizwan-led team after India triumphed over Pakistan by six wickets in Dubai, marking a disheartening outcome for the defending champions. He not only condemned the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for their apparent disinterest in reforming the sport's structure in the country but also directed his criticism towards the captain himself.
"We do not harbour any personal vendetta against the players. If I were not compensated, I would not be here discussing Pakistan cricket at all. Frankly, I have no vested interest in this team. I have been voicing my concerns since 2011 and have witnessed this decline over the years. Appointing individuals with abnormal traits as captains and making peculiar selections leads to such results. I have previously collaborated with captains whose personalities would shift multiple times within a single day," he stated.
Shoaib Malik interrupts, and Mohammad Hafeez takes a dig
Former captains Malik and Hafeez were also members of the same panel. Following a remark from Akhtar, Hafeez departed, while Malik interjected, urging the Pakistan pace legend to join the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and "rectify the system."
He stated, "Why not become part of the system just once? Join us and make the necessary changes."
Akhtar concurred, expressing that if PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi entrusted him with the responsibility of domestic cricket, he would require three years to implement changes. He acknowledged, however, that any employee of the PCB would inevitably face criticism.
"Entrust me with the domestic circuit, and I will set it right. I am willing to forgo my time with my family for the betterment of Pakistan's future. I am aware of the consequences I may face after three years, yet I am still prepared to make that sacrifice," he remarked.
Hafeez then made a light-hearted comment that elicited laughter from the group, saying, "Isn't three years a bit excessive?"
