Shastri: Shreyas Iyer a Lock for T20Is, Faces Test Squad Competition Ahead of England Tour

Shreyas Iyer has made a strong comeback in white-ball cricket, highlighted by his recent Champions Trophy performance and his role in the ongoing IPL 2025. This resurgence has earned him a BCCI central contract again, a year after being dropped from the list. Former head coach Ravi Shastri praised Iyer, calling him a definite choice for limited-overs cricket, though he remains uncertain about Iyer's prospects in Test matches.

Iyer's name will be in the mix when the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee picks the squad for the upcoming Test series in England, which consists of five matches and kicks off the 2025/27 World Test Championship cycle. Since being dropped during the home series against England last January, Iyer hasn't been part of the Test squad. He lost his central contract with the BCCI after not participating in the Ranji Trophy due to injury concerns. However, Shastri mentioned on the ICC Review that Iyer could have a shot at making the England tour squad if one of the key middle-order players is unavailable. Shastri noted, 'Shreyas Iyer has been exceptional for India in the last 18 months, making him a sure pick in white-ball formats, especially ODIs. He could get back into Test cricket, but it will depend on the competition and the other players available.'

What's new with Shreyas Iyer?

The 30-year-old has been on fire in ODI cricket lately, especially during the Champions Trophy where he scored 243 runs, making him the second highest run-scorer with an average of 48.60. Shastri talked about how Iyer adjusted his batting stance during last year's domestic season, leading to his impressive comeback. He pointed out Iyer's skill in playing shots on both sides of the wicket by shifting back and across, which helps him pull, hook, and cut effectively.

'He used to be very leg-side focused, but now he's more balanced with an upright stance. As he moves back, he lifts the bat, allowing him to play shots all around. If they bowl short, he can pull or hook, and if there's space outside off stump, he can cut too,' he explained. The cricket legend also mentioned how Iyer's adjustments have helped him overcome his past weakness of being targeted on the leg side. He stressed the importance of timing, hand-eye coordination, and Iyer's ability to be a game-changer when he gets into position early. 'This gives him more options instead of being too leg-side focused, which used to leave him vulnerable. Now he has the freedom to play both ways, and with his timing and skill, he can be really destructive, as we've seen in his recent performances,' he added.
