Shashank Singh Recalls MS Dhoni's Wise Words Ahead of IPL 2025: "Win Three Games..."

Shashank Singh, a right-handed batter, really made a name for himself during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. His impressive middle-order performance led the Punjab Kings to keep him on as an uncapped player before the big auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Shashank has been reflecting on some solid advice he got from MS Dhoni.

In IPL 2024, Shashank racked up 354 runs with a striking strike rate of 164.65 and an average of 44.25. His journey in last year's tournament was quite the ride. Initially, PBKS thought they had made a blunder by signing him during the IPL 2024 auction, mistaking him for another player with the same name.

After facing some backlash, PBKS clarified on social media that they had always intended to sign Shashank Singh, the batter.

Shashank shared how MS Dhoni once told him that if a player can win three out of ten games for their team, they’re among the top five or ten cricketers in the world.

“I had a chat with Mahi Bhai (MS Dhoni) about being a finisher. He said if you can win three games out of ten for your team, you’re in the top five or ten players globally," Shashank told PTI.

“That really boosted my confidence. I realized it’s not realistic to win every match, so I focus on the positives and try to learn from the mistakes,” he added.

Focusing on the technical details

Shashank Singh has really made a name for himself lately, and now teams are scrambling to come up with solid strategies to handle the Punjab Kings batter. But Shashank isn’t just sitting back; he’s busy adding some fresh skills to his game.

"I’ve been focusing on a few technical things for both batting and bowling. I haven’t met him yet, but I’m in touch with Ricky sir (the new head coach, Ricky Ponting). For my batting, I’m working on improving my pull and hook shots. I’ve also started practicing reverse sweeps because on slower pitches, it can be tough to hit the ball to long on or long off, so sometimes it’s just easier to reverse sweep or sweep it," he explained.

"In the last two training camps, I’ve put in a lot of work, probably facing around 1000 balls while reverse sweeping against spinners. I’ve done it before, but I want to feel more confident going into the season," Shashank shared, crediting his rapid improvement to having a clear mindset.

Recently, Punjab Kings named Shreyas Iyer as their captain for IPL 2025. It’ll be interesting to see if he and head coach Ricky Ponting can lead PBKS to their first IPL championship.
