Mumbai all-rounder Shardul Thakur delivered a game-changing performance in the crucial Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir, smashing his second first-class century. Batting at the BKC Ground in Mumbai, Shardul reached the milestone in just 105 balls, with a knock that featured 17 boundaries.
The 33-year-old walked in with Mumbai reeling at 91/6 in their second innings, facing a precarious situation after top-order stalwarts like Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ajinkya Rahane, and Shreyas Iyer had fallen cheaply. With the lead barely five runs, Shardul turned the tide with a counter-attacking innings, forming a crucial partnership with Tanush Kotian at the other end.
Shardul reached his century in the 60th over, raising his arms in triumph and passionately gesturing toward the Mumbai dressing room. His spirited knock earned him the moniker “lion of Mumbai cricket” from the commentator, reflecting his significance in the team’s fightback.

Shardul scored fifty in the first innings
Shardul Thakur showcased his batting prowess in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy clash against Jammu and Kashmir, contributing significantly in both innings. After scoring 51 runs in the first innings, Shardul helped Mumbai cross the 100-run mark, rescuing the team from a dire situation at 47/7. His crucial knock propelled the hosts to a total of 120.
In response, Mumbai bowled out Jammu and Kashmir for 206, conceding a lead of 86 runs. On Day 2, the visitors appeared poised for a comfortable victory, but Shardul and Tanush Kotian’s resilient partnership in the second innings turned the game around, helping Mumbai stage an impressive fightback.
Despite his heroics, Shardul was recently omitted from India’s squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. His last international appearance was in December 2023 against South Africa. Additionally, Shardul went unsold at the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Addressing the media, Shardul expressed his thoughts on his situation: “What can I say about my quality? It’s for others to recognize. If someone has quality, they should be given more opportunities.” He added, “I enjoy batting in challenging situations. It’s easy to perform in favourable conditions, but how you rise in adversity defines you. I see tough situations as a challenge to overcome.”
