India's all-rounder Shardul Thakur has demonstrated exceptional form for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, significantly contributing to the team's quarter-final victory over Haryana. He was also the standout performer for Mumbai during their unexpected loss to Jammu & Kashmir in the final league match of the tournament, scoring fifties in both innings.
In the match against J&K, Shardul had the opportunity to share the dressing room with Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who had made himself available for selection. Earlier this week, Shardul provided insights into his discussion with Rohit during the Ranji encounter, offering a glimpse into the India captain’s mindset during a challenging phase with the bat.
Rohit, who faced difficulties in scoring during India's recent series against New Zealand and Australia, silenced his critics with a remarkable century in the second ODI against England in Cuttack. His innings of 119 runs off just 90 balls was crucial in India's successful chase of 305 runs.
Shardul, a long-time friend and teammate of Rohit, expressed his admiration for the seasoned batter. He noted that Rohit maintained his confidence despite the absence of significant scores. During their conversation in the Ranji Trophy match, Rohit emphasized that he only required one impactful innings to regain his form.
"When he played that Ranji game for us and did not score runs, we had a chat because he had not scored in Australia either. But he was so confident that he told me, 'I know the runs are not coming now, but all I need is just one innings. Then, runs will come automatically again,'" Shardul shared with RevSportz.
Shardul on Rohit's knock
The all-rounder addressed concerns regarding Rohit's performance, attributing his recent dismissals to mere misfortune.
"During the Cuttack ODI against England, his batting did not suggest that he was struggling with form at any point. While he may get out occasionally, that is a common occurrence for everyone in the nets. Beyond that, he appeared very at ease. It is simply a matter of luck... one can only attribute it to luck. His ability to hit sixes makes him a formidable batsman in any situation. His caliber is unmatched," Shardul remarked.
Although Rohit did not score in the domestic match, Shardul emphasized that the Indian captain displayed confidence during practice sessions.
"As an opener, facing the new ball is always challenging. We should refrain from making judgments about him, especially considering the numerous matches he has secured for India across all formats throughout the years," he added.
