Shami Reflects on Career Fears After Injury: ‘I Was Scared to Even Run
2 months ago | 5 Views
Mohammed Shami, the experienced fast bowler for Team India, shared insights regarding the challenging period he faced during his rehabilitation following knee surgery, which sidelined him from competitive cricket for nearly a year. Although Shami was a key performer for India in the 2023 ODI World Cup, he participated in the tournament while nursing an injury that ultimately required surgical intervention. Consequently, he missed the 2024 T20 World Cup, where India claimed victory, as well as the significant Border-Gavaskar Trophy from the previous year.
After undergoing ankle surgery and navigating through various challenges, Shami made his return to competitive play for Bengal in a Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh in November. He also joined Bengal's squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. At 34 years of age, he demonstrated his fitness in domestic competitions, thereby regaining the trust of the selectors and team management ahead of the upcoming Champions Trophy.
Reflecting on his struggles, Shami admitted that there were moments when he experienced fear while running. “When you are scoring runs and taking wickets, everyone is with you. But the real test is to realize who is with you during tough times. I waited for an entire year and I worked very hard. There was a sense of fear even while running,” he stated in a video shared by the BCCI.
Nevertheless, the veteran bowler emphasized that such injuries and the rehabilitation process ultimately contribute to a player's mental fortitude. “It is difficult for any player to get injured after being in full flow, go to the NCA for rehabilitation, and then make a comeback. When you go through injuries, I feel you grow stronger as an athlete because you have to repeat a lot of things while being mentally strong. Whatever is done, it is done. I have crossed that phase. If you work hard, you will get the result. That’s what I believe,” Shami concluded.

With Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj absent from the squad for the five-match T20I series against England, Shami is anticipated to spearhead the pace attack for the Men in Blue.
In a video shared by the BCCI, Shami is seen flying a kite while discussing the significance of confidence and self-belief in his life.
"It does not matter whether it is flying a kite, bowling, or driving a car; if you possess strength and self-belief, I believe there will be no noticeable difference. Even after 15 years, I can still fly this kite. Therefore, confidence is essential for any endeavour," Shami remarked.
