Shahid Afridi Exposes PCB Chairman: ‘He Knows Nothing About Cricket’

Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has raised significant concerns regarding the current state of cricket in the country, revealing that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi admitted to him that he lacks knowledge about the sport. The situation within the Pakistan cricket framework has become a topic of intense discussion following the senior team's disappointing exit from the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 during the group stage.

Under the leadership of Mohammad Rizwan, the team was unable to advance to the semifinals, suffering defeats against both New Zealand and India. Their final group match against Bangladesh was called off due to rain in Rawalpindi, resulting in Pakistan finishing at the bottom of their group.

Criticism has been directed at various aspects, including Aaqib Javed's coaching decisions and his player selections for the tournament. Notably, Pakistan entered the Champions Trophy, which they hosted, with only one primary spinner, Abrar Ahmed.

Afridi has now criticized PCB chairman Naqvi, suggesting that he should seek advice from individuals knowledgeable about cricket rather than relying on bureaucrats.

“I met the chairman sahab a few days ago in Lahore. The initiative regarding the grounds and the improvements made at the Gaddafi Stadium are commendable. He has made efforts and is eager to continue," Afridi stated during an interview on Samaa TV.

"However, he also mentioned that he doesn’t know anything about cricket. If that is the case, it is essential to collaborate with skilled, technical individuals who have a genuine connection to the sport," he continued.

In recent years, Pakistan cricket has experienced numerous leadership changes within the PCB, with several coaches resigning and captaincy shifting among various players.

What is their relation with cricket?

Shahid Afridi expressed that the Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) deficiency in experienced professionals has contributed to a downturn in the senior team's performance. He emphasized the necessity of enhancing the domestic cricket framework in Pakistan.

Afridi questioned, "The individuals we observe in the selection committee and in directorial positions lack cricketing knowledge; they have predominantly been bureaucrats. What connection do they have with cricket? Why are they part of the selection committee? What qualifications do they possess to manage the domestic cricket system?"

He further remarked, "The performance of the Pakistan team is evident to all. It is imperative to fortify the domestic cricket structure. If the guardian is competent, the child will naturally excel."

Mohsin Naqvi, who serves as the internal minister of the Pakistan government and is a former caretaker chief minister of Punjab, assumed the role of PCB chairman last year.

During Mohsin Naqvi's tenure, Pakistan was eliminated from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup at the group stage.
