Shaheen Afridi Claps Back at Mohammad Rizwan During Tense Champions Trophy Clash

Tempers ran high between two of Pakistan cricket's top stars – Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Rizwan – as frustration mounted from the home team's struggle against some impressive batting by Tom Latham, Will Young, and Glenn Phillips. New Zealand racked up a massive score of 320/5 in their 50 overs during the Champions Trophy opener in Karachi, really putting the pressure on Pakistan's bowlers. Captain Rizwan was visibly frustrated with his bowlers throughout the match, and honestly, he had a reason to be. But there was one moment when Rizwan went too far, and Shaheen wasn't having any of it.

This drama unfolded in the 47th over. New Zealand was cruising at 265/4 when Shaheen delivered a ball that almost got Latham out, but instead, it edged for a four. It was a solid delivery that had Latham in a bit of a bind as he tried to play a flick shot. Shaheen deserved some credit for creating the first real excitement for Pakistan since Young's wicket. Instead of encouraging his bowler, Rizwan seemed upset and animatedly directed some words at Shaheen, which looked like he was blaming him. Shaheen, however, fired back with his own response.

Even former New Zealand fast bowler Simon Doull chimed in during the broadcast, saying, "I’m sorry, but you can’t blame the bowler there. That was a really good delivery."

A few overs earlier, Rizwan had a similar moment with Abrar Ahmed, who gave up 16 runs in his last over. After Latham hit him for a six, Rizwan approached him and tried to explain things calmly. But when Abrar didn’t seem to get it and Latham smacked him for two fours in three balls, Rizwan lost his cool and yelled at his bowler.

The Pakistan bowlers took a beating, with Shaheen ending up wicketless and giving away 68 runs, while Haris Rauf allowed 83 runs for just 2 wickets. Abrar was the standout in terms of economy, finishing with 1/47, while the other bowlers struggled to keep the runs down.
